A day for the dogs.

Solvang, CA is a quaint little Danish town located about twenty minutes north of Santa Barbara. My parents took my brother and me there when we were little a few times and ever since I started driving I've found it one of my favorite escapes outside of the city.
It's just far enough to make it an escape, yet close enough to make it a day trip and be home by dinner time.
This weekend Solvang hosted Santa Barbara county's first annual Dogtoberfest. I felt that due to recent events and all the time I've been spending with puppies lately it would be fitting to attend.
Jose and I took Dozer. The one puppy out of the litter that we are keeping. He's probably the calmest out of the bunch and the one that makes us laugh the most. You can't help but just fall in love with the little (soon to be very big) guy.
It was Dozer's first big outing. So we made sure to take a few toys, lots of puppy treats, and lots of plastic baggies for the long two hour drive. Little did we know that our goofy puppy would be lazy and sleep the entire way. I thought dogs were supposed to like car rides and stick their heads out the window... but not Dozer.
Dozer. Well... he did exactly what his name suggests: he dozed off.

Once we arrived I wasn't really sure what to expect. I had never attended one of these doggy day events that I hear people talking about. I was almost expecting a lot of old ladies and the weird dog lovers that are socially awkward in almost every way.

Luckily I was wrong... very wrong. Of course there was still the strange pet owners who dressed the poor pooches in all kinds of glittery apparel and accessories. But for the most part the event was for the dogs and raising awareness to the over population of animals in our shelters.
There were several organizations there with puppies and dogs to take home that day. They also had a booth set up to get $15 Micro chipping and registration. The people with all of these organizations are doing amazing and wonderful things.
Being a HUGE animal lover it makes me sad to see all the dogs without homes. Especially when I know people who don't understand that dog breeding and overcrowding in shelters is such a huge problem.

I guess you get where I'm going with this...
Yes: this is turning into a post for the ASPCA and the Humane Society and PETA...
Please spay or neuter your dog!
It just broke my heart seeing all of the dogs that needed homes and had to return to the shelter at the end of the event. I'm just glad that I can provide a home for at least two dogs out in the world for now.

Thanks Care4Paws for all the information and amazing things that you are doing in Santa Barbara county.
