A Letter to Percy's Person
Dear Percy's Person,
I met Percy some time in July while visiting one of the shelters. He was being held because you were in the hospital. I would visit him at his cage every week to check if his status had changed but it didn't. He sat there waiting...
One day I walked in to say hi as usual and found that he wasn't there. I was hoping that you had recovered and came to get him. I imagined a wonderful reunion. But that wasn't what happened. They had to move him to medical. He stopped eating.
Percy started to loose weight. I'd pop in and check on him. I'd ask how he was doing. For a few weeks he refused to eat and continued to loose weight. He was waiting but you never came.
Eventually the hold was up and he was available for me to bring him. By then he had lost a lot of weight, he was very depressed, he was very tired. I think he was waiting for you...
I made a promise to you even though we've never met that we'd do our best to make him strong again.
After about a week in our home he started to eat again and gained some of his weight back. He perked up a little bit and would investigate what was around him. I would say he was just "havin' a hobble." It was the cutest hobble.
He didn't move very fast or go very far but he'd roam around for a bit. After a little hobblin' he'd find his bed and lay down.
*hobble**sniff**hobble**sit**sniff**hobble**sit**sleep*
He was trying to be strong.
He got to come with me every day to work and get love from everyone.
He got lots of snuggles.
He got lots of kisses.
And everyone told him what a good boy he was.
Yesterday we had to say good-bye to sweet Percy. His little body was very tired and he let us know that he was done. I think he was trying to wait for you but he just couldn't do it anymore.
I know that you loved him. It was very obvious that he was loved and cared for. I know that if you could have you would've come for him.
I'm sorry I couldn't make him strong again.
I just wanted to let you know that even though we only had him for a short time he was very loved. He got home cooked meals and got to sleep in his very own warm bed every night. He kept me company while I worked. He even got a few snuggs from my other dogs.
Before he went I told him he was the best boy and I thanked him for letting me love him even though I wasn't his person.
I hope that where ever you are you can find peace that your dog was loved until the very end.
